Charity Soul funded research in the Cancer Research unit at York University for 5 years

Charity Soul funded research in the Cancer Research unit at York University for 5 years.  At the time I said that the funding would help me to try out new ideas, ahead of grant applications to the Government and the major charities.  This flexibility is simply not available in large so-called project grants, where you are normally restricted by specific aims and milestones. So what did we do? For many years we have studied the various different cell types which are present in almost every cancer type.  The...

New addition to Charity Soul

We are delighted to announce a new addition to the Charity Soul family. Relatively young amongst the current ageing collection of charity volunteers, born in 2007, but the ‘Charity Soulmobile’ will be most useful in our endeavours to enhance the fundraising activities of Charity Soul We have been able to purchase this vehicle with the help of donations from some of Charity Soul’s long established and valued sponsors to our cancer research fundraising cause.  Our intention in the use of the vehicle is to take it to local and...

CANCELLATION OF RODA FESTIVAL OF SOUL

CANCELLATION OF Roda Festival of Soul As mentioned in our last event up-date we stated we would keep people in formed of the situation, therefore it’s with deep and sad regret we have no alternative but to cancel the 2020 Festival of Soul in Roda. This is due to the rise in the mortality rate due to the escalation of the pandemic in Spain, plus certain UK Airlines cancelling flights until June, which will be again subject to a further review in that Month. If you have not had...

End of year review: Musically and Medically

The year just ended (2019) was a historic one for charity soul, both from a musical event organising and medical point of view. The start of the year saw us ‘soley’ (sorry for the pun) in charge of the Huntington WMC, York regular music event nights commencing in February. This was due to Mike Ward, a great friend and supporter of Charity Soul, inviting us to organise the events held at Huntington WMC. This was a...

End of an Era : New beginnings

The end of an era has arrived. After 5 years of donating a fantastic cumulative sum of £72k to stem cell research for prostate cancer at York University Cancer Research Centre to Professor Norman Maitland and achieving startling results, a new era has arrived where we have now today donated £10k to Professor Maitland’s able assistant Dr Fiona Frame. Due to Norman’s retirement and the closure of the York Centre Dr Frame has accepted a new post at the University of Hull’s...

All Good Things Must Come to an End

It seems like no time at all since Terry came to see me for the first time in my laboratory at York University.  He asked me what I would do if he gave me a pound towards cancer research.  He actually asked me just how much of the £1 I would spend directly on my research.  The answer was simple…. we spend every penny of every pound raised by Charity Soul directly on research.  The first meeting was just over 5 years ago, and...

A Report from the Front Line by Prof Maitland

At this time of year, we remember those who fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy today – but it is also the start of the University term for our new young researchers. This year the projects, which only run because of the generous donations from Charity Soul, were more popular than ever, and we ended up with 6 young aspiring researchers packing out my laboratory. In fact, there were a number of disgruntled unsuccessful applicants who made their...

Distinguishing fatal prostate cancer from ‘manageable’ cancer now possible

Scientists at the University of York have found a way of distinguishing between fatal prostate cancer and manageable cancer, which could reduce unnecessary surgeries and radiotherapy. The team analysed more than 500 cancer tissue samples A recent study showed that more than 25 men were being unnecessarily treated with surgery or radiotherapy, for every single life saved. It is believed that success rates could be hindered as a result of treating all prostate cancers in the same way. A team at the...

Summer Activities and Donations – Update

The supporters of Charity Soul have been very active throughout the summer with numerous events around the UK. Bridlington Spa Weekender – Charity Soul had a dual involvement at both the popular Spa Soul Weekender and also at the Windsor Hotel. There was also an extended presence this year on both Friday and Saturday which proved very rewarding, though extremely tiring, where we received substantial donations at both venues. As we were kindly invited to the Spa Weekender...
