Research Update (March 2017)

Research Update March 2017: Last year I introduced our “gene clipping” team of undergraduate students in Biology to you. The fantastic five were going to use the funds you donated to probe the basis for stem cells in prostate cancer. October, when they began their research seems such a long time ago, and like much research with a limited time (they have now gone off to prepare for their final examinations) the research went right up to the wire last month...

Fundraising Partnership

Fundraising Partnership – Charity Soul are delighted to announce that they have been invited to form a fundraising partnership with The East Coast Soul Collective Soul Club group via Rob Wicks, part organiser for the Soul Weekender event at Bridlington. We have been asked to staff (supply DJ’s) for the Club Room at the next Bridlington Spa weekend event, on Sunday 25th June. Rob would also like Charity Soul members to help with the raffle tickets sales during the weekender event, and we...

Sarah Collins & Keep The Faith playing live on April 22nd (Harrogate)

Sarah Collins & Keep The Faith, who will be playing live at the All Dayer on April 22nd are a 9-piece band with a full brass section who play authentic arrangements of original Northern Soul classics.  As a cancer survivor herself, Sarah is particularly proud to be supporting Charity Soul. In 2012 her career as a professional singer was brought to an abrupt halt when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour.  It was touch and go whether she would recover...

Meet the New Clipping the Gene Team in York

As previewed last month, our new team of undergraduate researchers have recently appeared in the laboratory. You can see from the big smiles that they are just getting started – it will all get much harder over the next couple of months. More and more is being written in the news media about ‘Gene Editing’ using a brand new science called CRISPR. As you know we have been carrying out these experiments with Charity Soul support for a couple of...

Make a Cancer to Cure a Cancer

Now this may seen strange to you as you read this, but we have decided to try to cause cancer (in the laboratory) in order to find the best way to treat it.  The big problem with a tumour is that it contains many different cell types, some of which are more dangerous than others – for example the cancer stem cells I have written about before.  However, by the time we get such cancers from patients to study, they...

Some Ice with that Sir?

Just in case you get the wrong idea, we do not sit around sipping cocktails at the University of York. But why do we need ice? Well, it turns out that a lot of the materials we use for our research have to be kept on ice or they deteriorate badly – just think of the cooling required for organs in transplants, as they are rushed across the country. Many of the research materials we use – for example in...

Where did the time (and money) go?

So here we are, 3 years down the line since Terry Hopkinson came to my laboratory to see what we were doing with cancer stem cells, and persuaded his many friends on the Northern Soul Scene to join him in the venture that has become Charity Soul.  I know that the motivation, the loss of a close friend, could not be any stronger for wanting to make a difference, but that does not ensure success.  Well we now know, almost...

Summer Donation Updates

The recent donations made to Charity Soul have surpassed all previous expectations, and has resulted in Charity Soul donating in June a sum of £4,000.0 to Professor Maitland. This presentation was made by Lilly Miller, probably the youngest dj on the soul scene, who along with her mother Rachel and brother Ben was given a tour of the laboratory at York. This sum of money was the culmination of Charity Soul fundraising events which took place at Huntington, York, Gateshaed, Manhattan...

New Treatments

A few things stand out over the last few weeks, since I came along to the big event in Headingley. The clinical trial of our ‘cancer-dissolving’ virus is still proceeding in the Netherlands.  If you remember, this treatment uses a common human virus (which causes sore throats) we have engineered to grow only in human prostate cancer cells.  For those of you interested in the EU Referendum, this potentially new treatment would not have been possible without funding from Brussels!  However,...
