Summer Activities and Donations – Update

The supporters of Charity Soul have been very active throughout the summer with numerous events around the UK. Bridlington Spa Weekender – Charity Soul had a dual involvement at both the popular Spa Soul Weekender and also at the Windsor Hotel. There was also an extended presence this year on both Friday and Saturday which proved very rewarding, though extremely tiring, where we received substantial donations at both venues. As we were kindly invited to the Spa Weekender...

From the (Gene) Editor……

I hope you remember the research projects I set for my group of students last year? As I said at the time, the research, supported by Charity Soul funds, takes months to work through, and we’ve not been idle over that time. I hope you’ve been taking note of the many articles in the newspapers and in the other media, describing gene editing as THE biology of the decade. All of our 2017 students have now got their degrees (some did...

Bone marrow protein a ‘magnet’ for passing prostate cancer cells – Press Release

Scientists at the The Cancer Research Unit (University of York) have shown that a protein in the bone marrow acts like a ‘magnetic docking station’ for prostate cancer cells, helping them grow and spread outside of the prostate. Now that this mechanism has been identified, however, scientists at York have found a way to block the signal in the cancer cells, disabling the cell and preventing it from multiplying at a new site in the body. Their research showed that the protein,...

CLIPPING THE GENE UPDATE JUNE 2017

All of our students have now finished their studies and will shortly be receiving their degrees from the University of York.  As part of this they all produced a report (or thesis), which acknowledged the support of Charity Soul.  Without this support they would not have been able to do the complicated genetics experiments they have reported. All of the experiments seemed to work, and we have prostate cells in which 3 different genes have been edited.  Due to the students’...

Thank you Charity Soul – from Prof Maitland

Thanks to Charity Soul, this recent paper, in a top cancer journal was made possible.  The research was begun as part of an EU-funded International project, which finished before we could get the ultimate data.  This data was provided by an Italian Graduate Dr Giovanna Nappo, who carried out the key experiments, supported by the funds raised by all of you at Charity Soul. The paper tells us that a cancer patient’s immune system, which he would use to fight off...

On Our Travels: Putting it out there

On Our Travels: Putting it out there:- An important part of scientific research is working with others and sharing your results with scientists in centres around the UK, Europe and the World. There is no point in carrying out expensive cancer research if you keep it all to yourself, and if it doesn’t pass the scrutiny of other scientists. Sometimes these meetings result in criticism, but more often a sense of working together to pool expertise is the result (collaboration). However,...
